If you use the integration with Salesforce, you can set up your attributes by mapping them to fields in your Salesforce account. These attributes are used for personalization in your emails. When an attribute personalization string is included in an email that you send to your Salesforce Leads, Contacts, and Account fields, the personalization string will be replaced with the corresponding data from the Lead or Contact's record in Salesforce.

How To Set Up Profile Attributes

This topic covers setting up profile attributes. All profile attributes defined in your account appear in the profile management workspace on the right. This dialog box has a special tab, labeled Salesforce. If the advanced profile management feature is not enabled in your account, you will not see these sections in the navigation pane. Contact your account manager with any questions about the features enabled in your account. All of your Salesforce Lead, Contact or Account fields appear in the appropriate dropdown menu. Choose the appropriate field.

NOTE: See the important note about data types later in this topic.
NOTE: Whether or not the Lead or Contact will be able to modify the field from the Profile Center depends on whether you've selected the Read-only check box on the General tab.
NOTE: If you designate that you want the attribute to be displayed on the Salesforce Profile Center, this will override the parameters of the Hidden check box for sends to Salesforce records only.

To set up your profile attributes, follow these steps:

  1. In the navigation pane of the application, click Subscribers.
  2. In the Subscribers area of the navigation pane, click Profile Management.
  3. In the profile management toolbar, click Create Attribute, which brings up the Attribute Properties dialog box.
  4. Complete the General and Data tabs in this dialog box, as described in the Attribute Properties Dialog Box topic.
  5. Click the Salesforce Mapping tab.
  6. To associate this attribute with a Salesforce Lead field, click the drop down beside the Mapped to Salesforce Lead Field.  To associate this attribute with a Salesforce Contact/Account field, click the drop down beside the Mapped to Salesforce Contact/Account Field.
  7. If you want your Leads and Contacts to be able to view their data for this field in the Profile Center, select the Display on Salesforce Profile Center for Leads or Display on Salesforce Profile Center for Contacts check box.
  8. Click OK in the Attribute Properties dialog box when done.

Important Note about Data Types

The data type that you select from the Data tab of the Profile Properties dialog box must match the data type defined for the Lead or Contact field in Salesforce. (For preference attributes, the Lead or Contact field in Salesforce must be Boolean.)

The application verifies that the data types match when merging personalized fields at the time of sending an email. If the data types do not match, the user attempting the send will receive an error, and the email will not be sent.

How To Set Up Preferences

Setting up a preference attribute and mapping it to a Salesforce Lead or Contact field follows the same process described above for setting up profile attributes. The Lead, Contact or Account field that you map to the preference attribute must be a yes/no or true/false (Boolean) field.

How To Preview the Profile Centers

To see what the Profile Center looks like to a Lead, follow these steps:

  1. In the navigation pane, click Subscribers.
  2. In the Subscribers area of the navigation pane, click Profile Management or Preference Management.
  3. In the profile/preference management toolbar, click Preview Salesforce Profile Center for Leads, which brings up the web page that Leads will see.

The Profile Center displays all attributes (profile and preference attributes) that are mapped to Salesforce fields and are marked to be displayed on the appropriate Profile Center. You'll see the same preview regardless of whether you access the preview from the profile management workspace or the preference management workspace.

Note the following about the Profile Center:

  • Attributes shown with a red asterisk are those that are defined in your account as required.
  • Attributes that are defined in your account as read-only Data that is read-only are not editable.

Repeat these steps to preview the Profile Center for Contacts.
